Horus-Scope

Coming full circle in my work around Technology and Myth I am feeling very complete. I definitely resisted, had to learn a lot to catch up with the technological world, but came through with my values around sustainability, mythos, and soul even stronger. Horus has been a good guide in ways that I had not imagined. I needed a strong archetypal male figure to bolster me through the new territories. I feel empowered and more whole myself and foresee that what I learned will support me in my future endeavors whether googling how to feed my organic garden, setting up a poetry blog site for my daughter as she has requested, or perhaps keeping the kids off the computer and playing in the Hawaiian red dirt.

In lieu of the broad scope of Horus I came up with the idea of a Horus-scope, my reading on the planets. I added that to my powerpoint presentation, and then upon further exploration on the internet found out that the Egyptians had indeed used an astrological system before the Greeks. I am appropriately the Wadjet which as I described in earlier posts which the-all seeing eye of Horus...

We are told that the signs of the Zodiac as perceived and recorded by the pharaohs have recently been discovered at the Louvre Museum in Paris (I will have to check this out when I visit this summer!) (source: Egyptian Government). People were to read their luck not as shown in daily newspapers under signs such as: Capricorn, Taurus, Aries etc, but rather according to the somewhat different ancient Egyptians horoscope.

Thoth (August 29 - September 27)
Thoth is the god of learning. Those born under this sign are typically accurate and capable problem-solvers and excellent organizers as well.
However, they would give up anything in return for a better offer.
Strengths: seasoned and original.
Weaknesses: rash, impatient and self-rigorous.
Jobs assumed: journalists, actors, lawyers and teachers.
Horus (September 28 - October 27)
Horus is the god of the shining sun. Those born under this sign would risk their lives to avenge father's death. They courageously face dangers and seldom forestall catastrophes.
Strengths: optimistic, brilliantly sociable and motivated to win the best in life.
Weaknesses: unrealistic, stubborn and reluctant to confront problems. Jobs assumed: politicians and media men.
Wadget (October 28 - November 26)
Wadget is the goddess of royal cobra; the symbol of knowledge. Those born under this sign are rational, cautious, conscientious, altruistic, ambitious and self-opinionated.
Strengths: Strongly loyal to family values.Weaknesses: pessimistic, haughty and sometimes unsociable and miserly.
Jobs assumed: contractors, directors, architects, engineers and editors.
Sekhmet: (November 27 - December 26)
Sekhmet is the god of war and rivalry. Those born under this sign possess a brilliant mentality and sustained optimism and imagination.
They are eloquent and highly polemic in all fields.
Strengths: witty and highly adjustable in hard times.
Weaknesses: impatient, impetuous and quarrelsome.
Jobs assumed: teachers, lecturers, writers, announcers, investors.
Many of the world sports champions are born under this sign.
Sphinx: (December 27 - January 25)
Sphinx is the treasure guardian who could convert himself into the shape of any creature. Those born under this sign can change their attitudes to fit nearly all situations.
They are stern and shrewd and are characterized by an investigative faculty, self-discipline and high sensibility.
Strengths: While outwardly witty and humorous, in reality they are rather serious, discreet and discerning.
Weaknesses: They make misjudgments and are sometimes proud and haughty.
Job assumed: Self-employed.
Shu: (January 26 - February 24)
Shu is the god of sunlight and wind. Those born under Shu are incredibly creative. Whenever their talents are proved, their success becomes inevitable. Nevertheless, they are always apprehensive of possible failure.
Strengths: humorous, conscientious and principled.
Weaknesses: being hesitant, they often lose great opportunities.
Jobs assumed: social work, counseling, agriculture, care and prevention of cruelty to animals.
Isis: (February 25 - March 26)
Isis is the god of discipline. Those born under this sign are honorable, straightforward and idealistic. They use logic and intuition and view things from different perspectives. Their relationship with others are quite smooth.
Strengths: active and self-confident. Their thoughts and sense of humor render them quite popular.
Weaknesses: they get obsessed with ideas and retire when problems grow increasingly serious.
Jobs assumed: photography, commercial arts, and advertisements.
Osiris: (March 27 - April 25)
Osiris is the god of the nether world. Those born under this sign are emotionally perplexing and often misunderstood.
Strengths: dynamic, intelligent, always opportunity-taking and enterprising.
Weaknesses: avoid responsibility.
Jobs assumed: teaching and sales.
Amun : (April 26 - May 25)
According to ancient Egyptian beliefs, Amun was the god who constructed the world. Those born under this sign are strong, firm and always sought for guidance.
Strengths: strong will, outstanding courage and self-confidence. They are excellent leaders as long as they do not over task their followers. Weaknesses: obstinate and intolerant.
Jobs assumed: financial work.
Hathur: (May 26 - June 24)
Hathor is the goddess of the Earth and the Sky. She is emotional, expressive and strongly linked with love. Those born under this sign enjoy life to the dregs. They are experts at winning the best in most situations.
Strengths: charming and romantic.
Weaknesses: Irascible and easily stirred up to strong love or bitter hatred, jealous and envious.
Jobs assumed: social work, show arts, painting and communication.
Phoenix: (June 25 - July 24)
Phoenix is the bird of life and resurrection. Those born under this sign can create possibilities from scratch.
Strengths: Optimistic, flexible and can promote optimism in others.
Weaknesses: solitary, stubborn, dreamy and unrealistic.
Jobs assumed : risky jobs, sometimes self-employed and are most probably great engineers.
Anubis (July 25 - August 28)
Anubis is the guardian of the nether world. It is the most determined of all signs. Those born under this sign are self-confident and their ability to keep things under control make them widely respectable
Strengths: sympathetic, generous, loving and perseverant in proving their view point.
Jobs assumed: advertisement and fashion.

Flying

I had a dream the other night that I was a falcon and was flying over Egypt and beyond, all the way around the world. It was a different perspective from so high above and I noticed that when looking down the world was flat, but looking out to the horizon you could see that the world was indeed round. I'm a bit over reading Friedman's book, The World is Flat, and tire of the metaphor. But what really came up for me around the dream was travel. Surprise, imagine me wanting to travel (for those who know me)? I have actually wanted to travel to Egypt all my life but with Horus in my life I feel like I have a personal invitation. I love going on sacred journeys and it is my vision to lead them myself someday as part of my work. The Shadow Side of Horus

Well, I certainly had a rough week with guests, work and mid-term papers. I rushed to finish my Horus paper not realizing I had another week. I admit the paper was weak. I never got the soul of it for some reason, and for me that is terrible. If I do anything it has to have some meaning to me and as much as I tried to bridge the world of Horus with the flat world, I don't think I pulled it off.

Horus, why do you elude me? What am I not getting? I feel as if I have not quite risen to his level, to the level of the Pharoah and the Queen. I have not achieved that excellence and that realization in turn made me start thinking negative thoughts about myself. I'm not smart enough; I don't belong in this program, etc. Such negative self-reflection is more a defense to not looking at the shadow side. If the light side of Horus is the regal, the powerful, and the enlightened, then the shadow side is surely the commonplace, the disempowered, and the confused. That pretty much sums up my week. Instead of judging myself, however, I will look to integrating the shadow, cast off parts of myself and embrace them as my teachers as well. Instead of emphasizing the godly and kingly aspects I will try on humility and acceptance. And also pray that Roxy is a benevolent and forgiving professor.

Horus at the Zoo and other creatures

Somehow I had blog-block and missed the fact that I was supposed to post this week. For some reason it does not come naturally to me. I did enjoy podcasting but am still uncertain as to where my voice or thoughts are going.

After a trip to the Honolulu zoo, I have been enamoured by the animal world, as I enjoy all the creatures who live around me. In my own family we have cats, a dog, a guinea pig, chickens and soon goats. The birds are a big part of my life since I hear the song birds in the morning, and unfortunately the wild roosters cockle-do-a-doing all hours of day and night. At the Honolulu zoo there was an amazing collection of birds from all over the world, including falcon (Horus). I was struck by all the colors and manifestations of these feathered friends. The bird is a symbol of the Self and likewise there are so many representations of Self as well.

The King and Queen

Horus as the falcon or hawk-headed one who's name is believed to mean "he who is above" and he is associated with the sky and kingship. His right eye was the sun (masculine) and his left eye the moon (feminine) so he appears to embody the King and Queen archetype. Together King and Queen comprise the Hieros Gamos, the union of heaven and earth, sun and moon. According to Jung this is also the symbol of the harmonious union of the unconscious and consciousness; the individuation process. Horus seems to have stimulated the King/Queen archetype in my life. I recently drew the Queen card from the Caroline Myss Archetype tarot cards and have been looking at my own ability to take my rightful place in the world, own my power and authority. On the shadow side I have looked at my ego's control and also aknowledge my humility in the face of the great mystery. Bringing the King and Queen into balance is my work in my own individuation process. I feel gifted to see that all that is unfolding in this dream is purposeful, connected, and magical. So I take seriously that Horus has chosen me and is asking me to step forward and step up. Specifically the King (mature male) aspect or animus within myself which will balance my more developed feminine aspects and help me to manifest my vision and work in the world.

The Birth of a Blog

Well, I did it, created my first blog and it was fun though now that I have created new life I have no idea where it will go. Something about the word blog always turned me off. Blah, blah, blahhg...like the blogger was always just going on and on about nothing important. I always thought I had to have something really important to say and a specific audience. Isn't that what they always told us when we wrote our essays with pencil and paper? Perhaps I do have something really important to say, but who am I saying it to? If I just send it out there with noone to read it (like the proverbial tree in the forest), was it heard?

Recently a god came to me. It was Horus the Egyptian god of the sky and the kings. I think his message to me is to take a greater perspective, to own my visions and to take my own power as a king would. The Eye of Horus, also called the Wadjat, is the eye of power and protection. It is all-seeing, kind of like the World Wide Web. It's also like a third eye to me looking beyond the present realities. Beginning my journey at Pacifica Graduate Institute is like birthing a different "I", through Inquiries, Imaginings and Insights. I hope the Eye of Horus will guide and guard me.
